Venue Preview #2: Gilded Balloon

We’ve a real soft spot for the Gilded Balloon.

The Library Bar. The gourmet fast food huts. The fact it isn’t the Udderbelly. It all feels so damn classy.

Some good stuff on too, now you mention it.

In the main programme, comedy rockers Axis of Awesome are always a good laugh, we’ve heard nice things about Claudia O’Doherty, and Mark Watson makes a brief cameo in the middle of the month, developing material for a full run next year. Phill Jupitus is around doing his Impro-chums sort of thing, while the peerless wonder that is Barry Cryer is offering up what we’re sure will be a bloody lovely early evening autobiographical treat.

In the evenings there’s no escaping jewel-in-the-Gilded-crown Late 'n' Live – still unrivalled in the late night comedy booze-a-thon stakes – and the not-quite-as-experimental-as-it-thinks-it-is Comedy in The Dark (does exactly what it says on the tin). Stand up competition So You Think You’re Funny is also worth a visit to spot some stars of the future, if that’s your bag.

Theatre-wise there’s not too much to write home about, though a few things should be worth a punt. The Girl Who Thought She Was Irish sounds fun, and Phil Nichol will almost certainly be fantastic performing monologue Somewhere Beneath It All, A Small Fire Burns Still. Bubblewraps & Boxes looks like a nice one for the family – there’s clowning and cardboard and things!

All that washed down with a pint in The Library and a posh pizza from the courtyard outside.

Can’t complain really.
