Blogpost #1: What We Do (and What to Watch)

The china is polished, the kettle is descummed, and the old tins have been rattled of their crumbs.

No, it’s not a doting grandchild’s careful preparation for afternoon tea at the nursing home.

It’s CRUNCHTIME.

With only 25 days until 2011’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival officially begins, things are moving from brew to heavy boil here at Biscuit Towers. We’ve been looking forward to getting back on the reviewing trail, and we’ve got a lot of news to share with you, but before we blow the lid off the biscuit box there’s one thing we need to settle...

It occurred to us the other day that some of you might have NO IDEA what Fringebiscuit does! And you simply can’t have a tea party without laying the table. Or sending invitations. Or checking for biscuit allergies. So, packaged as a handy selection of Shows To Watch (i.e. those that have been generating a healthy amount of anticipation, or are from artists we enjoyed last year), here is a demonstration of What We Do: 140 Character Reviews. The format isn’t completely tweetlined, but it should give you an idea of what to expect from us – and put you on the right track for some excellent pre-bookings! Enjoy.

Scary Gorgeous – Bedlam – 05-20 Aug – 9.00pm
RashDash follow last year’s uplifting Another Someone with a darker blend of live music and winning dance-theatre. Expect to be transported.

Sheeps – Pleasance Courtyard – 03-28 Aug – 4:45pm
Former Footlights boys picking up buzz with a nice line in sharp sketch comedy. Outside shot at a major nomination? Don't bet against it.

Doris Day Can F*** Off – Zoo Southside – 03-28 Aug – 6.15pm
Now an hour long, Greg Mclaren’s bonkers one-man opera has the potential to charm, tickle and deeply worry. Development sounds promising.

Oyster Eyes: Keeping the Captain Warm – Just The Tonic – 4th-28th – 8.55pm
Mad as a bag of frogs, but last year’s show had some genuinely side-splitting moments. Word on the street is they've only got better.

Eat Your Heart Out – Assembly George Square – 16-28 Aug – 11.45pm
Raw and anarchic, this experimental performance-cabaret graduates to the Assembly big leagues. Should become a launch pad for all-nighters.

Dead Cat Bounce – Pleasance Courtyard – 3-28 Aug – 10.30pm

The huge Pleasance One should be perfect for the Irish comedy rockers. If new songs are up to scratch they'll be a pint-in-hand must see.

...and lastly (it almost goes without saying):

Bane 1, 2, and 3 – Pleasance Dome – 03-28 Aug – 5.20pm
Joe Bone’s magnificent one-man noir-parodies attract the kind of rabid devotion usually reserved for Star Wars. Get on board already!

Later this week we’ll be talking about our hopes for this year’s Fringe, and then we’re laying on a rich spread of pre-festival recommendations and guides.

Oooh, you Jammy Dodgers!
